County Match (Open) 2014-15: Sussex – Essex

In all my years playing for Sussex against Essex, we have always struggled to achieve much against them, particularly when playing away at Wanstead. It was therefore an excellent result for the Sussex team last Saturday when we defeated Essex … Continue reading

Horsham Club Quickplay Knockout 2014-15: Mansson – Nkomo

Last Tuesday saw the opening two rounds of the Horsham Chess Club Quickplay Knockout. As reported in my previous post, I beat Gary Whitmore 2-0 in round one, but my second round encounter against Melusi Nkomo was a tougher match.

County Match (Open) 2013-14: Sussex – Essex

I suffered a frustrating loss in last Saturday’s county match against Essex. After some mutual inaccuracies, my opponent blundered, allowing me to win a piece, but I didn’t look at the position carefully enough and so passed up on the … Continue reading

Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2013-14: Horsham 1 – Worthing 2

Not long after taking on the Worthing first team, we were faced with their second team, this time away from home. Our first result was a rather lackluster draw between Don Banks and myself, where I equalised easily enough, but … Continue reading

Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2013-14: Horsham 1 – Worthing 1

After an absence of nearly a year, I returned to Horsham’s Mid-Sussex League team on Tuesday, when we faced Worthing 1 at home. Unfortunately, I played a very poor game (I plead tiredness!) and went down in 25 moves. Anthony … Continue reading

4NCL Division 3 2013-14: e2e4.org.uk 2 – Celtic Tigers 2

The e2e4.org.uk second team got off to a good start in this year’s 4NCL. Playing in Division 3, they scored a comfortable win against Celtic Tigers 2. Soon after the first time control they had achieved a 3-0 lead, and … Continue reading

County Match (Open) 2013-14: Sussex – Surrey

Today I played my first serious competitive game since May, in a county match for Sussex against Surrey. Unfortunately, I proved to be extremely rusty, and made a serious error on move 16, from which I was unable to recover.

4NCL Division 1 2012-13: e2e4.org.uk 1 – Wood Green 2

While e2e4.org.uk 1 had hoped – and managed – to beat Warwickshire Select 1 on Saturday, there was little expectation of a similar result against a strong Wood Green 2. In the end, they did lose, but only by the … Continue reading

4NCL Division 2 2012-13: e2e4.org.uk 2 – Wessex

While my game on the Saturday had been dull, my game on the Sunday was anything but. I was faced with Michael Yeo, a dangerous attacking player armed with the White pieces.
