Last night, Horsham 1 were playing away at Bexhill 1. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, they were forced to field a considerably weakened team. The match is not yet concluded, with the score at 2-1 in Bexhill ‘s favour and one game unfinished.
I was White on board one against Howard Tebbs. The opening was a Caro-Kann Advance. I managed to build up a strong position, but was unable to maintain my advantage. I then allowed my opponent to seize the initiative and ended up in some trouble. However, as both players started to run short of time, it was then my opponent’s turn to let things slip. In the subsequent endgame, I was fine until another mistake left me again in trouble. Fortunately, my opponent – now down to less than 2 minutes on the clock – decided to allow a repetition rather than push on for a win, as he evidently couldn’t see how to continue. The game was therefore a draw.
I give the game below with some notes.
