Horsham 1 made the long trip down to Hastings to play Hastings 2 last night. It proved worthwhile as the team secured a 3-1 victory. I contributed a win on board three.
I was White against Mark Brougham, who adopted the Hippopotamus formation. Although I didn’t gain a definite advantage, I maintained some initiative on the kingside. This was transformed into something more tangible when my opponent slipped up when faced with my advanced g- and h-pawns on the kingside. Although I didn’t choose the strongest refutation of his mistake, what I did select was good enough, and I was able to navigate to the win without much difficulty.
I give the game below with some notes.
