Last night, I won a rather strange game in the Horsham 1 home match against Hastings 1 in Mid-Sussex League Division One. It was crucial in winning the match 2.5-1.5, as the other three games were drawn.
I was Black against Henry Cove, and the game soon entered unconventional territory, as Black won a pawn, but gave up the right to castle. White spent a lot of time trying to find a way to an advantage, but was unable to exploit some inaccuracies by Black. Black started to unravel his position, and created some threats to trap the White queen; White reacted badly, and soon resigned, facing the loss of a piece. However, although things seemed clear to both players on the night, it turns out Black won the piece in the wrong way, and White could, in the final position, have gained adequate compensation.
I give the game below with some notes.
