I played my second opponent (Robert McDonald) in the rapidplay competition last week; we completed both our games in the competition on the night.
I was White in our first game. My opponent lost a pawn early on to a known mistake, but I did not follow the win of a pawn up correctly; I should have taken a second pawn, but decided to play “safe”, which resulted in my opponent gaining compensation. The evaluation of the position fluctuated from move to move, as both players committed inaccuracies. Finally, my opponent blundered fatally, and soon lost on time as he desperately searched for a way out.
I give the game below with some notes.
