On Tuesday, I was up against promising junior James Ratcliffe in the quickplay knockout. Unfortunately, despite obtain good positions in both games, I was eliminated from the competition.
In the first game with Black, despite an opening inaccuracy which my opponent failed to exploit, I managed to establish a winning position. However, with both players running short of time I let my advantage slip and my opponent escaped with a draw.
In the second game with White, I established an advantage and started to put pressure on my opponent’s position. However, with both of us running short of time, I overlooked a tactical possibility for my opponent, which resulting in me losing material; I resigned at once as my position was hopeless.
I give the games below with some notes.
