Last Tuesday I was up against Ian Comley in round five of the club championship. I managed to win again, putting myself in the chasing pack half a point off the leaders.
I had the White pieces, and the game opened – unsurprisingly, given the players – with a French Defence. I managed to gain an advantage out of the opening. My opponent then made a misjudgement, allowing me to sacrifice the exchange for two pawns, also preventing his king from castling. He looked to create counter-play against my king on the kingside, but overlooked a strong threat, which forced him to resign. His position was in any case objectively hopeless.
I give the game below with some notes.
