County Match (Open) 2024-25: Sussex – Surrey

Sussex managed to run Surrey close in the away fixture at Cheam back in November, but in the reverse fixture last weekend collapsed to a heavy defeat, only scoring 2 points to Surrey’s 14. On a personal note, I suffered a disappointing loss, where I blew an excellent position out of the opening.

I had the Black pieces and played the solid Queen’s Indian Defence. My opponent improvised a dubious line in the opening, and by move 16 had a clear advantage; however, I failed to consolidate it as both players made a series of errors. Finally, I allowed my opponent to building up an initiative on the queenside, which proved fatal.

I give the game below with some notes.
