Horsham Club Rapidplay 2022-23: Mansson – Lynn

This year the club is running a rapidplay competition across the season. The basic format is a round robin, with most of the club members entering. Each player may play up to two games, one with each colour, against each other player. However, there is no requirement that all the games be completed for the resolution of the competition; the winner will be the player with the most points at the end of the season, irrespective of the number of games played.

Horsham Club Quickplay Knockout 2021-22: Mansson – Forster

Last Tuesday I was able to help finish off last season’s quickplay knockout competition, by playing my final match against Mike Forster. Mike managed to prevail by winning the first game, then holding a draw in the second.

Horsham Club Championship 2021-22: Mansson – Stimpson

My last game in this year’s club championship was against Phil Stimpson. It proved to be an unsatisfactory game for both players, who both had chances to win, but failed to take them. In the end it was a draw, which left me with an overall score of 5/7 in the competition, which was good enough for second place.

Horsham Club Championship 2021-22: Higgs – Mansson

On Tuesday I was up against Anthony Higgs in the Club Championship. I needed a win to keep my hopes alive, but the game ultimately ended in a draw, meaning that Mark Broom is now champion – congratulations to him!

Horsham Club Knockout 2021-22: Mansson – Higgs

Last night, I was up against Anthony Higgs in the semi-final of the club knockout. Our first attempt to decide the match ended as a draw, so we were back for a second game; this had been delayed for almost a couple of months, mainly because Anthony had been away.

Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2021-22: Horsham 1 – Lewes 1

Horsham Club Championship 2021-22: Taylor – Mansson

My club championship game against Alex Taylor featured an intriguing endgame, where I had a queen against a bishop, but his pawns were all easily defended by his bishop, and moreover he had a protected passed pawn on the seventh rank that I constantly had to keep an eye on. I managed to win, but I am not at all sure it should have been won with best defence. See what you think!

Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2021-22: Horsham 1 – Eastbourne 1

Last night, the Horsham first team scored a decisive win over their Eastbourne counterparts, notching up four wins in the four board match. My game against Paul Carpenter was only the third time I’ve actually played him in all the time I’ve played in the league; he’s been a regular member of the Eastbourne team for many years, but usually on a lower board.

Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2021-22: Horsham 1 – Brighton 1

Last Tuesday, Horham 1 suffered a disappointing loss against a slightly weakened Brighton 1 side (Geoff James was ill). Mark Broom was defeated on board two by Calum Salmons, while the efforts of the other Horsham players only yielded three draws, despite all having their chances.

Horsham Club Knockout 2021-22: Higgs – Mansson

I played Anthony Higgs in the semi-final of the club knockout last Tuesday. The game ended in a draw, so we will need to have a replay in the near future. As it happens, I was lucky to escape with a draw. From its unorthodox beginning, the game gradually shifted in my opponent’s favour, until he had a decisive advantage. However, he let things slip in the resulting rook and pawn endgame, allowing me to secure a draw.
