Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2022-23: Horsham 1 – Bexhill 1

Yesterday evening, Horsham 1 had a disappointing draw against Bexhill 1 away from home. We were 2-1 up but in the last game to finish, our board one lost on time in an unclear position. My game was drawn. I gained an early advantage, but ran into trouble because of indecisive play. Fortunately, my opponent was happy to head for a repetition, despite my position being difficult and my time shortage.

Horsham Chess Club Championship 2022-23: Warren – Mansson

Last Tuesday I was up against Nick Warren in the club championship. I was Black and the game opened with a once-obscure queen’s pawn opening that has become popular in recent years. This lead to a complex position with chances for both sides. The game featured mistakes by both players as the assessment of the position shifted back and forth, before finally ending in perpetual check.

Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2022-23: Horsham 1 – Worthing 1

Horsham 1 played Worthing 1 last night. Unfortunately, the team lost the match narrowly (1.5-2.5) but I was at least able to win my game.

Horsham Chess Club Quickplay Knockout 2022-23: Mansson – J.Taylor

In the quickplay knockout, having lost in round one of the main competition, I went into the plate competition for round two. I was up against another Taylor, Jonathan this time, and I managed to prevail fairly comfortably over two games.

Mid-Sussex League Division 1 2022-23: Horsham 1 – Horsham 2

Horsham 1 and Horsham 2 started their Mid-Sussex League season with a match against each other, as they are both in Division 1. The match ended in a narrow 2.5-1.5 win for Horsham 1. I drew a scrappy game with Black against Ian Comley.

Horsham Chess Club Championship 2022-23: Mansson – Broom

Yesterday evening, I played my second game in this year’s club championship. I was up against Mark Broom with the White pieces. I decided to take on his Slav Defence rather than the Petroff for a bit of variety. The game was tense, as both players ran short of time, although they really only had one chance each to gain a decided advantage. Eventually, they decided to bail out and agreed a draw.

Horsham Chess Club Quickplay Knockout 2022-23: Mansson – A.Taylor

I played my first round game in the quickplay knockout last night. I was up against Alex Taylor. While my results in this event have been good over the years, this time I was defeated in the first round of the main competition, meaning that I go into the plate for once.

Horsham Chess Club Championship 2022-23: Mansson – McDonald

Last Tuesday, I played my first game in this year’s club championship. I was up against Robert McDonald, who has been promoted to the Rook (the top section) this year. The game started with the sharp Modern Benoni opening. His response to my less usual 12th move was initially reasonable, but he then soon went wrong, and a blunder in a lost position convinced him to resign at once.

Horsham Club Rapidplay 2022-23: Lynn – Mansson

My second game against Thomas Lynn in the rapidplay (see my last post for more details of the competition) was rather more one-sided that the first. My opponent made a serious blunder fairly early on, losing a piece, and was unable to recover.
