McArthur Cup 2024-25: Horsham – East Grinstead

Last night, Horsham took on East Grinstead in the McArthur Cup semi-final at home. The match was played over six boards at the usual league time limit. Unfortunately, Horsham ended the night 2-3 down, with an unfinished game that is at best a draw. Therefore, they have been eliminated from the competition.

I was up against Peter Kemp on board three with the white pieces. The game started with the Open Variation of the Ruy Lopez; both sides played inaccurately during the opening phase, before the game soon resolved into a balanced endgame with opposite-coloured bishops. Although Black tried for a while to prove something, the game was in the end a predictable draw.

I give the game below with some notes.
