Last night, I was up against James Reid in the first round of the Quickplay Knockout. I managed to win both games easily enough, and so progressed to the next round in the main draw.
In the first game, I was White. My opponent made an early mistake, allowing me to win a pawn and seize the centre. He soon decided to give up a piece rather than retreat one of his knights to the back rank. I was able to win pretty quickly as his risky attempt to complicate further backfired.
In the second game, I was Black. This game was a bit more complicated, as I failed to fully exploit a weak opening by my opponent. However, I was able to build up pressure, which induced my opponent to make a terrible blunder, losing a rook. My opponent soon resigned as he was facing either a quick checkmate or further loss of material.
I give the games below with some notes.
