Last Friday, Horsham 1 continued their good start to the season with a 3-1 win over Crowborough 1.
I had the White pieces against Jon Lawrance. The opening resulted in a roughly level position, but after some maneuvering, the game turned in my favour. However, both players started to run short of time, which affected the quality of play. First, I missed several opportunities to turn the game decisively in my favour; then, I made a rash sacrifice to open up my opponent’s king, which gave him a winning position. Fortunately, in the resulting time scramble, I managed to somehow wriggle out and reach a drawn position. The game was adjourned, but subsequent analysis showed the position to be a clear draw, so the players agreed to split the point without troubling the adjudication panel.
I give the game below with some notes.
