I was up against Jordy Savill in the third round of the knockout last night. I managed to score a convincing win, and so move on to the semi-finals.
I had the White pieces and played 1 d4; my opponent responded with the Budapest Gambit. What unfolded was a Budapest player’s nightmare; White managed to keep a lid on Black’s piece play, and gradually build up his position. A misjudgement on the 13th move left Black in a very difficult position, from which he was unable to extract himself. White fairly soon had the opportunity to force mate with a couple of sacrifices, and proceeded to do so.
I give the game below with some notes.
