I made a start to my club championship games for this season yesterday. I was Black against Peter Harbott, whom I have played many times over the years. The game turned out to be another tricky encounter.
I managed to equalise comfortably, and built up some pressure in the endgame. However, as I started to run short of time, I let things slip and even gave him a chance to take the upper handle. Fortunately for me, the Harbott compulsion to grab a hot – not to say poisoned – pawn, returned, and he allowed me to set up a deadly pin. By the time we reached the time control, the game was clearly won for me, and he soon resigned.
I give the game below with some notes.
